The Museum boasts a large numismatic collection, consisting of about 700 coins dated
from the Kushan period (imitation of Vasudeva’s coins) until the beginning of the twentieth
century. Unfortunately, most of the material has not been published. The vast majority of the coins have been collected by students and during the archaeological expedition
«Problematic laboratory for the historical and archaeological study of the Afrasiab site». The
coins are a valuable historical and cultural source of knowledge on economics, political history,
metrology and monetary relations. Although quite limited, the information they provide is diverse
and deeply specific, and particularly valuable in combination with written
sources and archaeological data specifying the area of these finds’ distribution.
